About
A gallery publishes this, and says so on every page.
Near Mint is a free daily screen about the art and collectibles markets, written for someone who goes to exhibitions, has bought a print or two, and could spend between £1,000 and £25,000 without knowing where to start. It exists because auction headlines quote prices nobody pays, price databases cost hundreds a year, and no free publication shows the arithmetic.
The conflict, stated plainly
The owner of this publication is an art dealer. The gallery's own works never appear in the Tape, the Record Book or the Attention Index.
The gallery’s own works appear in one place only: a slot labelled “From the gallery”, outside the Tape, outside the Record Book, outside the attention instrument, with a one-line disclosure. A reference point that quietly promotes its owner’s stock stops being one — so the wall is visible rather than promised.
What the name means
Near mintis a grading term: the condition just below perfect. It belongs equally to a print, a film poster, a slabbed comic and a sealed game — which is the point, because those are all the same purchase once you understand edition, condition and provenance. A mint is also where value is struck, which is what the gold is for.
How to read us
- Every figure carries its method, its date and its source. See Method.
- Nothing here is investment advice, and no page implies that art prices will rise.
- Corrections are published within 24 hours, on a public log.
- Our crawler identifies itself and obeys robots.txt. See the bot page.
Still to be settled before launch
- Who publishes it. UNDECIDED (own limited company vs the gallery). This decides the privacy notice, the disclosure wording and who owns the reader list.
- The name is chosen but not cleared. CHOSEN, NOT YET CLEARED. Clear at UKIPO in classes 9, 16, 35, 41 before buying a domain or publishing a public page. Also check EUIPO/USPTO if the list will be international.
- A contact address, once the domain exists.
- The gallery’s registration as an art market participant with HMRC, confirmed before any enquiry is passed to it.
Pre-launch. No domain is registered and no email is collected. Built on the same principles as Datum and The Order Paper.
